About Vesta Asteroid, NASA's Dawn Hard work finally paid off. After nearly a month to work researching the second largest astoid Vesta, there is encouraging news which will be known to us. Look pics from space created by nasa images.
As quoted by USA Today, NASA's Dawn mission team Monday revealed fresh views of Vesta nasa images pics from space, the second-largest asteroid. Dawn arrived at Vesta last month, beginning a year-long investigation of the 330-mile-wide protoplanet, a would-be rocky planet such as Earth that never made it out of the asteroid belt. Mission scientists hope to view Vesta's mantle through views of the massive crater, more than 200 miles wide and 8 miles deep, on its southern side.

"We're finally in orbit around Vesta. And it's everything we hoped it would be," said mission science chief Christopher Russell of UCLA. "It's really a most exciting small world sitting out in the asteroid belt."

Dawn will descend to a 1,700-mile-high orbit on Aug. 11 to begin more focused science examinations of the asteroid.

Early views show that Vesta has radically different geography on its northern and southern halves. Older craters adorn the northern hemisphere, says Russell. The southern half seems much less cratered and possesses curious grooves on its surface, as well as unexpected dark steaks emerging from features. Preliminary crater counts point to a bombardment of the asteroid with meteors about 4 billion years ago, Russell says.
